Introducing Inline Retry: Real-Time Approvals Before Payments Ever Fail

Payments that once took days to recover now resolve almost instantly

Introducing Inline Retry: Real-Time Approvals Before Payments Ever Fail

Merchants lose approvals every day to soft declines that could have been fixed in seconds. Today, we're introducing Inline Retry , a new capability in the Revaly platform that turns those declines into approvals in real time.

Why Inline Retry Matters

Inline Retry resolves treatable soft declines before they ever surface as failures. That means:

  • Revenue lands on the billing date, not days later. Transactions that would have failed now approve on the first attempt.
  • Customers never see declines that didn't need to happen. Instead of seeing “payment failed” at checkout or receiving unnecessary outreach emails, your customers get a seamless experience for payments that were always going to work.

When payments approve on the first attempt instead of entering recovery, everything downstream gets lighter. Your team spends less time chasing failed charges, your recovery queues stay cleaner, and involuntary churn drops.

How It Works

A meaningful share of your declines aren't hard declines from issuers. They're treatable soft declines—temporary interruptions like communication errors, expired session contexts, or  "do not honor" responses.

When Revaly sees one of these on an otherwise healthy transaction, we retry it in real time, before your checkout or billing system ever returns a result. If the retry succeeds, the customer only ever sees "payment successful" and the payment never enters recovery. If it doesn't, you're no worse off: MIT transactions flow into existing recovery treatments, CIT transactions return a decline as they would have before.

Where Inline Retry Fits

Revaly's platform acts across the entire payment lifecycle, and Inline Retry is the earliest step, addressing treatable soft declines before they’re ever surfaced as failures.
When Inline Retry can't resolve a transaction, it moves into your existing recovery treatments, following the same path it would have originally.

Getting Started

Inline Retry is automatically enabled for Enterprise merchants. If you want to see exactly how Inline Retry works, read our technical documentation. You'll see metrics in your Revaly dashboard showing how many payments were treated, how many were approved, and how much revenue that represents.

If you’re not yet using Revaly and are interested in how this capability works, get in touch with our team of experts who can walk you through what our platform typically unlocks for merchants.

 Q&A

Q: Does this add extra time to my checkout or billing process?
A: No. Inline Retry operates so quickly the experience feels instantaneous to your customers. There's no noticeable delay.

Q: Will this put too much pressure on issuers or increase decline rates?
A: No. Inline Retry only applies to the first eligible attempt and targets specific soft decline codes where a retry is safe and likely to succeed. We're not repeatedly hammering issuers — we're catching issues in the moment they occur.

Q: What happens if the inline retry also fails?
A: You're no worse off than before. For MIT transactions, the payment flows into your existing recovery treatments (Intelligent Timing, Outreach, etc.) as it would have originally. For CIT, the transaction ends and the customer sees a decline.

Q: Do I need to do anything to enable this?
A: No. Inline Retry will be automatically enabled for Enterprise level merchants. No integration changes, no UX updates, no new logic to build.

Q: How will I know it's working?
A: You'll see metrics in your Revaly dashboard showing how many payments were treated by Inline Retry, how many of those were successfully approved, and how much revenue was rescued in real time.
